Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment – Women’s Suffrage Movement
“Forward Into Light”
Welcome to the SalitaSpeaks celebratory edition! August 26, 2020, marked the 100th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment which secured women’s constitutional right to vote.
“To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and women’s constitutional right to vote, buildings and landmarks across the country lit up in purple and gold on August 26, 2020, as part of the Commission’s nationwide Forward Into Light Campaign, named in honor of the historic suffrage slogan, “Forward through the Darkness, Forward into Light.” Visit womensvote100.org for more information about the commission and to view photos of the locations that participated in the commemorative lighting event. #ForwardIntoLight
While voting privileges did not extend to women of color in 1920, the new law paved the way for generations of women voters. Throughout history, brave individuals and communities challenged the leaders of their day, many times with great sacrifice, for voting rights. Regardless of your gender, age, race, or ethnicity, be sure to Exercise Your Right To Vote!
